Nice consistency going this month. This blog can really help one improve, of course you have to put in the work ... But it can provide a lot of inspiration, support, & great training advice. When I joined, my marathon PR was 3:40 & I got it down to 3:06 ... Don't think I ever could have done that without the advice & encouragement I got from others on here. Do you have a specific race you are training for?

My goal is to BQ; is started to run in April/2012.

so my strategy is to log 40 miles per week including two quality workouts to increase my VDOT;

my races are in the Atlanta area and consist of 5ks and 10ks

I am currently at VDOT 45;

never ran a marathon; my goal is to aim for a time 3:15 (my cutoff for my age group is 3:25);

overall before i try a marathon i want to be in shape and fast enough over the long distances (half-marathon and long runs) so that the marathon does not hurt me too much;

January 2013 (5K 21:46).

I think i would start to seriously train for a marathon if I am able to run a marathon pace of 7:45 and i am able to run at least 50 miles per week without any problems.

my current calculated marathon pace is 8:00; and i log 40 miles; i want to keep this up for a while and stay uninjured until i think it is okay to increase the mileage;

the most important thing for me is to stay injury free. Times are not so important; what is important for me is to get stronger, have a better running technique, have a better running feel; do long runs and speed training; get healthier and stay uninjured (run on trails, right shoes, right stride, ...); and at the same time just, observe, wait and see what happens.

I like the Hanson way of training with well-measured long runs, quality workouts and follow also the rules of Jack Daniels;

Sounds like you have a solid outlook & approach ... we are in the same age group ... as 3:25 is my required BQ time too. You will get it without question if you follow what you outlined & as you mentioned ... stay injury free. Within a year of consistent running, my 5k dropped from 22 to sub 20 consistently.

My goal after my 3:06 marathon in Oct., 2011 was to go sub 3 at Boston. After 2 months of increased mileage & running a trail 50k ... my knee decided to put me out of commission ... staying injury free is key, take it slow & the progress keeps coming.

I am following Hanson's marathon method now ... well, as a baseline ... I run based on how I feel. But I like his principles.

We need to meet up for a run ... what area do you live in? I run a lot in Piedmont Park ... and also on some routes north of town as that is where my son lives. Let me know when and where you are running sometime, and I will join you.
